You may not play, put into play, or take control of a unique card already in play that you own or control (except for duplicates), or that is in your dead pile.
I have only one copy of an unique character in my deck. This copy is in my dead pile. Can I use A Hostage Rescued to put it into play? The faq seems to prevent this... |

You can. The event specifically lets you target the card in your dead pile, which won't be IN the dead pile when it is put into play, so the rules of uniqueness are not violated. |

The wording on this card says choose a character in your dead or discard pile, and put it into play. Does this mean that it is targetting this character? More specifically, can Catelyn Stark VED be the target of this event (she's immune to events). Or alternatively, does this event work when someone has played the "Calm Before the Storm" VED plot card? |

You are not targeting the character so much as targeting a card in the dead/discard pile.
Immunity to events has no bearing on this card at all. All character abilities are only "active" when they are in play (unless otherwise specified). Characters with immunity to events are only immune when they are in play. This card only works on cards that are not in play, so immunity never enters into the situation. |

May I play this event after the last challenge of the phase has resolved ? Because as I read the timing flow chart for the challenge phase, there is a Player Action window before any challenge is initiated, but not after the last challenge of the last possible active player has resolved. I hope I've made myself clear. |

The timing flow chart is a little awkward, but you can play it after the last challenge. There has to be. After all, there are a lot of effects that might let me initiate an additional challenge that I might not be able to (or wanting to) play until after my third "normal" challenge. Should I be blocked from playing something like Lord Eddard's Command when I want to just because I am the second player? So there is a player action window after the last player's third challenge.
That window is on the flow chart, just not in a particularly obvious way. There is an arrow labeled "Active Player's Next Challenge Opportunity" looping from the "Challenge Resolution" framework action window back to the Player Action window at the top of the chart. There is still an OPPORTUNITY for an additional challenge after the second player's third challenge, so you follow this arrow back and have the opportunity for actions. It is only if the active player does NOT initiate a challenge in the "Initiate Challenge" framework action window that the chart does not loop back but instead proceeds to the "Finished with Challenges" framework window (after essentially skipping all stuff during the challenge). |
