Are characters with immunity to character abilities affected by Specialized? (Assuming that it is a character that made the challenge specialized and not Twist of Fate.) |

You are making a common mistake and misunderstanding the nature of traits. There is nothing inherently true about a card (or challenge) just because it has one trait, or doesn't have another. If I told you there was a new card coming with a Direwolf or Lord trait, would you be able to make a guess at much of anything other than the card type (and even that is hit-and-miss) or the art? No. That's because there is absolutely nothing in the game rules that depends on or defines various traits. If I give your character the Night's Watch trait, does it automatically become neutral, lose some icons, or get the "No Attachments" keyword just because most cards with that trait have those characteristics? Of course not. But it would be subject to the Night's Watch Agenda through the trait. You see, the trait does not actually define anything about the card; it just creates a mechanism by which other effects can interact with it. The same is true for challenge traits. There is nothing inherently true about a challenge with the Specialized trait; the trait is just a mechanism through which other cards can interact with the challenge or, as is the case with Feral Direwolf, define the duration of their effects. This is perhaps easier to see with the Melee trait. Some cards say that characters you control get +2 during a Melee challenge. Others say your claim increases. So are either of those things "characteristics" that are inherently true about a Melee challenge? Of course not; they depend on the presence of the card effects during challenges with the trait, not on the trait itself. The Feral Direwolf is the same way. Say that instead of Specialized, Feral Direwold said "characters with more than 1 icon do not count their STR during Military challenges." Would you say that the ability is working on the challenge, changing the definition of the Military challenge, or would you say that the ability is working on the characters? Yes, one part of the Direwolf's text works on the challenge, giving it the trait. But the other part of his text works on the characters participating in challenges with the Specialized trait; it does not define the trait because no trait has an inherent definition, bestowing inherent "powers" on whatever has that trait. This is just the explanation, BTW. The ruling itself is an official one from FFG. |

But isn't the "don't count their strength" part just a definition of what the specialized challenge trait does? It seems to me that this character ability targets the challenge by changing it's trait rather than individual characters. I know that you all know a lot more about the game than I do but can anyone point me to the section of the rules produced by fantasy flight that answers this question. I have yet to see an "official" ruling from the game makers on this question which I find sort of puzzling. |

There is a section in the FAQ that explains character abilities in detail (and a similar one for events). At the end of that section, under "additional notes," it explains that when a character ability has two different effects, separated in different sentances/paragraphs, you treat those effects as though they were on different cards. So say you had two different cards; One says "while you have a character named X attacking, the challenge gains the Specialized trait." That effect is obviously working on the challenge, giving it the trait. The second SEPARATE card says "Characters with more than 1 icon do not count their STR during challenges with the Specialized trait." THAT effect is working directly on participating characters, provided that the current challenge has the Specialized trait. It is not working on the challenge itself. (Just like an ability that says "this character gains stealth during an Intrigue challenge" is not working on the challenge itself.) If the effect is working directly on the character, then the character can be immune to it (that's part of the Immunity section of the FAQ). Probably the most important thing you need to realize is that there IS NO DEFINITION of a Specialized challenge. There is nothing in the rules text ANYWHERE that defines or is inherently true about a challenge with the Specialized trait because Specialized IS a only a trait. That shouldn't be so hard to see. Afterall, there is nothing in the rules that defines or is inherently true about a character with the Lord trait, an attachment with the Condition trait, a location with the Warship trait, a plot with the Others trait, etc. All that any trait does, challenge or otherwise, is create a way for card abilities to interact with that character, location, plot, challenge, etc. There is no RULES definition of a challenge with the Specialized trait. There are only CARD ABILITIES that define how characters behave during challenges with the Specialized trait, but that isn't the same thing as defining the challenge. So this whole "appropriately immune characters can count their STR during Specialized challenges" thing isn't a concrete ruling, it is an application of ALL the rules concerning how character abilities are defined and resolved, immunity, and traits. |

No you can\'t cancel the ability. Or rather it wouldn\'t do anything really. The reason being is that it says \"While Boarding party is attacking...\" So this means there is really no point where the ability kicks in. It is just always on while he is attacking. So even if you did manage to cancel it, it would turn right back on. You need to blank the Boarding Party\'s text box to remove the specialized ability. |

If I have someone like Conn Son of Corrat (ROK), does this mean that when I attack and the opponent has only Eddard Stark (VAL), that Eddard cannot participate because it would lower his STR to 0? Or does the lowering of STR to 0 happen AFTER the defenders are declared? |

The STR is never ACTUALLY lowered to 0. That is important for burn effects that kill characters when they have 0 STR. If Eddard is in a challenge with Conn, his STR never actually changes. What happens is that when you go to add up the STR of attackers and defenders when resolving the challenge, you just don't count characters in that calculation if they have more than 1 icon. You are perfectly free to declare characters with more than 1 icon as attackers or defenders (since there are things like renown and other abilities that just require a character to be partipating in the challenge, this can be very useful), they just won't contribute to the attacking or defending STR (and thus toward winning the challenge). |

There is no definition of "Specialized" in the rules. You cannot call a challenge "Specialized" just because you want to or just because the participating characters only have 1 icon each. A challenge can ONLY become Specialized through a card effect. If there was no card effect to give the challenge the trait, it is not Specialized no matter what the icon count on participating characters happened to be. Without something like a Boarding Party, King's Scribe, or Twist of Fate to give the challenge the Specialized trait, your Blood and Glory cannot be played. |
